During the Week, Apple received FDA approval for its over-the-counter hearing aid software, integrated with AirPods Pro, underscoring how technology is blurring the lines between consumer tech and healthcare.
The healthcare landscape is rapidly evolving, with **BigTech** companies making significant strides in the personalized health space. As technology platforms continues to dominate with network effects and vast financial resources, they are uniquely positioned to steamroll traditional and even more technology savvy health care competitors.
The ongoing digital revolution is reshaping numerous industries, but perhaps none more profoundly than healthcare. As digital platforms continue to expand their reach into the health sector, they are poised to gain increasing control over how healthcare is delivered, accessed, and consumed. This trend represents both tremendous opportunities for improving patient outcomes and significant challenges as these platforms take larger "bites" of the healthcare market, incrementally gaining control over key parts of the healthcare value chain.
Over the past decade, tech giants like Meta (formerly Facebook), Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Microsoft and Alphabet have made significant inroads into the healthcare sector. What started as ventures into fitness wearables and telemedicine has since evolved into comprehensive healthcare ecosystems, using data-driven technologies to reshape how healthcare is managed. These platforms, which already possess massive user bases and vast amounts of data, are naturally positioned to offer personalized healthcare solutions through the use of AI, Big Data and Cloud.
During a recent panel discussion on the Digital Transformation of Healthcare as part of the Centre for Excellence in Digital Transformation (CeDT), experts from various sectors came together to explore the future of healthcare in the digital age. The panel brought to light the accelerating impact of BigTech on the healthcare sector, highlighting both the immense opportunities and the challenges that lie ahead. This conversation merged seamlessly with the broader narrative of how digital platforms are steadily taking control of healthcare, driven by their mastery of data and artificial intelligence (AI).
One of the most visible and often discussed examples is Apple’s shift from fitness tracking to a full-fledged health ecosystem with iOS HealthKit. HealthKit provides a central repository for health and fitness data on iPhone and Apple Watch. With the user’s permission, apps communicate with the HealthKit store to access and share this data. With the **Apple Watch**, Apple has captured a significant portion of health-conscious consumers who use the device to track everything from steps and heart rate to sleep and blood oxygen levels. Thus, Apple’s HealthKit and ResearchKit further solidify its grip on personal health data, turning iPhones and Apple Watches into continuous health monitoring devices. Through these ecosystems, Apple is gradually integrating itself into people’s everyday health routines, collecting enormous amounts of health data in the process.
Amazon, on the other hand, has set its sights on becoming a health services provider. With the acquisition of PillPack and the launch of Amazon Pharmacy, the e-commerce giant now controls a significant portion of the pharmaceutical delivery market. Amazon is also moving into telehealth services with **Amazon Care**, allowing employees to access virtual healthcare consultations, prescriptions, and at-home care. Amazon’s robust logistics infrastructure, combined with its seamless digital platforms, allows it to deliver healthcare services directly to consumers’ homes, bypassing traditional healthcare systems and reducing costs.
Amazon's approach exemplifies how digital platforms are gradually shifting the center of gravity away from hospitals and traditional providers, toward a more decentralized and digital-first healthcare model. This means that, in the future, your primary healthcare interaction may be with an Amazon chatbot or an AI-based triage system before you even talk to a human.
At the heart of these digital platforms’ expansion into healthcare is their unparalleled access to big data and their ability to leverage artificial intelligence (AI). Companies like Google, through their AI arm **DeepMind**, are working on predictive analytics that can diagnose illnesses early and propose personalized treatment plans based on individuals' medical histories, genetics, and real-time health data.
The key strength of these platforms lies in their ability to collect, analyze, and monetize massive amounts of personal data. With every Apple Watch heartbeat logged, every telemedicine appointment on Amazon Care, and every health-related Google search, these platforms grow stronger, enabling them to offer increasingly personalized healthcare services. As AI algorithms become more sophisticated, these platforms will be able to provide even more accurate diagnoses and predictive health insights, reducing reliance on traditional healthcare providers.
In the coming years, digital platforms will likely continue to take more bites of the healthcare market. As their influence grows, healthcare may become more decentralized, more data-driven, and more personalized. But with that evolution comes the responsibility to address privacy concerns, regulatory frameworks, and ethical implications. The vast amounts of personal health data collected by these platforms place enormous power in their hands, raising questions about how that data is used, stored, and shared. Moreover, there are concerns about the potential for monopolistic practices as these tech giants gain a greater foothold in healthcare.
Regulators will need to establish clear guidelines to ensure that these companies use health data ethically and that they do not prioritize profit over patient care. Balancing innovation with data privacy and security will be crucial as digital platforms become more deeply embedded in the healthcare ecosystem.
However, D2C health brands are capitalizing on privacy concerns, offering more personalized, empathetic care and niche solutions, especially in stigmatized health areas. Moving forward, both large and small players must focus on balancing insights, accountability, and user trust to shape the future of health tech.

Over the Weekend, my Sunday Long Run was with a spiritual experience at the Khairtabad Ganesh Pandal, where the towering 70-foot Ganesh idol was surrounded by a sea of devotees even at 5:30 AM.
After a quick darshan of Bada Ganesh, we began a rejuvenating eight-mile run around Hussain Sagar lake. The early morning mist hung low over the water, creating a serene atmosphere. Along the route, we encountered several Ganesh immersion processions. The sight of towering idols being carried through the streets was truly awe-inspiring. The air was filled with the sounds of both latest hit numbers and devotional songs. As I ran alongside the processions, I felt a surge of energy and excitement. The vibrant colors, the infectious enthusiasm of the devotees, and the sense of community created a truly unforgettable experience.
As usual, to conclude any morning run around Hussain Sagar, we indulged in a sweet treat (Vaishnavi’s Birthday as well) at Tewari Brothers Mithaiwala. The aroma of freshly fried jalebi and the rich, creamy texture of Rabdi were simply irresistible. And the Club Kachori and Aloo Sabji are simply awesome.
Sunday afternoon was even more eventful. After a morning of Fun, Festivities and Food, I joined the community for a special Ganesh Festival lunch at PBEL CITY. The Mahaprasadam was a feast for the senses, with a variety of delicious vegetarian dishes served in a festive atmosphere. As a volunteer, I had the privilege of serving the devotees and witnessing their joy and gratitude.
In the evening, the festivities continued with a cultural program featuring multiple dance and Musial performances including a traditional Garhwali dance performances.
The graceful movements of the dancers and the vibrant colors of their costumes were a delight to watch. There were also demonstration of Kalaripayattu, an ancient Indian martial art form.
May this festival season bring you health and happiness.
I Love You
Shailendra
