"Reflecting on the past weekend, it was a delightful whirlwind of emotions! Witnessing my brilliant students graduate filled me with immense pride. It was great to catch up with the IBS Hyderabad MAB2023 graduates. More power to you.
But the celebrations didn't stop there! I also had the joy of reveling in Onam festivities friends and family. These moments remind me of the essence of sustainability - the threads that connect us, the importance of preserving our traditions, and the responsibility we bear for the planet.
And speaking of sustainability, I would like to discuss the ENABLE NET ZERO which has emerged during our Digital Green Regional Consultations.

During the Week, Apple’s Mother Nature skit, featured in its iPhone 15 launch divided the internet. To many, it’s a creative masterstroke. To others including many in the Android camp, it’s a master cringe.
I would like you to focus on Apple’s focus on ensuring that their suppliers also do their bit on sustainability (2:51- 300 Apple suppliers have committed to using 100% clean energy). I have made this point multiple times that the imperative for sustainability initiatives should be demand driven. If large B2B buyers like Apple are driven by their end-users to get more sustainable products and services then we would see an extraordinary drive for sustainability in the whole value chain.
The impact of globalization and digitalization on the integration of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) into the global business environment is transformative. Globalization has broken down trade barriers, creating opportunities for MSEs to access international markets. Digitalization has been the linchpin, providing MSEs with tools to establish a global presence through e-commerce, digital marketing, and online communication. It has streamlined supply chains, allowing MSEs to source materials globally. However, this integration presents challenges like increased competition. MSEs must adapt by harnessing digital technology for efficiency, innovation, and market responsiveness. In this dynamic landscape, embracing globalization and digitalization is critical for MSEs to thrive on the global stage.
The Digital Green Regional Consultations were aimed at framework development for fostering sustainable development through digital transformation. These consultations hosted by respective Icfai Business School campuses convene experts, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders to explore the intersection of digital technologies and environmental sustainability. They have served as platforms for sharing insights, best practices, and innovative solutions. Through open dialogues, panel discussions, and practical case studies, participants have shared the challenges and opportunities presented by digitalization in achieving green objectives. These consultations have been instrumental in shaping the ENABLE NET ZERO framework which may guide strategies, policies, and initiatives that empower Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) to harness digital tools for environmentally responsible practices, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future.
I would like to introduce the ENABLE NET ZERO Framework, a comprehensive approach for empowering budding entrepreneurs and managers to foster a sustainable ecosystem using digital technologies for their Micro and Small Enterprises.
ENABLE (Empowering MSEs through Digital Green Solutions) framework has components dealing with providing access to digital tools, networking opportunities, financial resources, digital literacy programs, and advanced technologies, fostering a sustainable ecosystem for their growth and development.
1. Empowering MSEs: MSEs are usually not able to access affordable digital tools, hindering their capacity to streamline operations and embrace sustainability practices. However, our regional consultation highlights success stories like Ms. Ambika, who adeptly steered her business into the digital realm during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her success demonstrates how MSEs can use digital tools and practices to empower themselves. This addresses the challenge of limited access and showcases the transformative potential of digital technologies for MSEs in their quest for a sustainable future.
2. Networking and Collaboration for MSEs: Connecting with local communities, partners, and customers can be challenging for MSEs. Participants in our consultations have acknowledged the power of digital networking through platforms like social media. MSEs can actively engage with communities, share their sustainability initiatives online, and overcome isolation. This fosters collaboration and garners support, enabling growth.
3. Access to Capital for MSEs: Access to financial resources is a significant hurdle for MSEs seeking to invest in digital green solutions. Various stakeholders have highlighted solutions such as crowdfunding platforms and digital payment systems. These mechanisms enable MSEs to raise funds for sustainable projects. Partnerships with sustainability-focused investors and organizations also offer vital financial support.
4. Bridging Skill Gaps for MSEs: Tailored digital literacy programs address resource gaps concerning digital skills and expertise. MSEs’ owners have emphasized the importance of these initiatives, as they equip MSEs with the necessary knowledge and capabilities to harness digital tools effectively for sustainability.
5. Leveraging Technology for MSEs: Our consultations have underscored that integrating technology, particularly AI and ML algorithms, can optimize energy use and resource consumption in MSEs. These technologies enable MSEs to achieve resource efficiency and promote sustainability by effectively managing their operations.
6. Ecosystem Development for MSEs: MSEs often operate in isolation, needing access to a supportive sustainability ecosystem. Participants have shared anecdotal evidence regarding the pivotal role of digital green and transformation service providers in bridging this gap. These providers promote green digital choices for consumers, raise sustainability awareness, and encourage responsible business practices, fostering a sustainable ecosystem for MSEs.
The NET ZERO framework focuses on the adoption of digital technologies for environmental sustainability through two lenses: Tools and Impact.
The three tools focus on digital transformation initiatives, assessing environmental impact, and using digital technologies to mitigate any adverse impact of the production process. The Network of Digital Technology service providers, Sustainability experts, and Enablers is another essential aspect of the framework.
The ZERO part implies zero impact of production processes on the environment, with a focus on workforce, machines, material, and waste management. This framework is particularly relevant for budding entrepreneurs and managers in the space. Platforms can optimize the supply chain, reduce inefficiencies, and improve logistics for MSEs. By leveraging digital platforms and data analytics, businesses can source materials sustainably, reduce waste generation, and promote recycling and upcycling initiatives.
By adopting the NET ZERO framework, businesses can promote sustainable commuting practices, telecommuting, and digital collaboration tools to minimize the carbon footprint associated with the transportation of employees. They can also utilize digital technologies for machine monitoring, predictive maintenance, and optimization of machine usage, ensuring machines operate at their peak efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and extending their lifespan.
In conclusion, the ENABLE NET ZERO Framework is a comprehensive approach that can help Micro and Small businesses embrace sustainability and achieve their goals of a sustainable future. By leveraging this framework, entrepreneurs and managers can foster a sustainable ecosystem for their businesses and contribute to a better world.

Over the Weekend, I was part of 13th Convocation of Icfai Foundation for Higher Education . It was time to rejoice and reconnect with the IBS Hyderabad MBA2023 batch. It was very gratifying to see them taking the first steps in corporate career and super proud of their early days in business world. It was also great to catch up with proud parents during the convocation and see the pride in their eyes and voice. More power to all of you.
It was also super weekend of Onam Celebration by PBEL City Malayali Association. The weekend was marked by Vadam Vali (Tug of war) Finals, Cultural Programs, Chenda melam drumbeats, arrival of Māveli and of course delicious Onam Sadhya.
One of the important consideration during any event at PBEL City is the unrelenting focus on sustainability with zero tolerance for any use of single use plastic and encouraging reusable or bio-degradable material for serving food.
This also marks the onset of festival season with Ganpati arriving soon to bring more peace and happiness. Happy Festival Season to all of you.
I Love You
Shailendra
