Rest in Peace, Gen Bipin Rawat. You leadership would be sorely missed.
All of us were shocked to hear the news of the tragic army helicopter crash on Wednesday followed by the heart breaking news of CDS and 12 others succumbing to their injuries. I was in fact attending GeoSmart India 2021 at HICC where the top leadership from Industry, academics, government including defence services were deliberating on the role of Geospatial Knowledge Infrastructure in driving new business models and a new ‘knowledge economy’ based upon data, applications/analytics and existing knowledge.
Always a “People’s and Soldiers’ General”, even in his recorded message , he paid glowing tributes to the Indian armed forces personnel killed in the 1971 war.
“Apni senao par hai hamein garv, aao milkar manaye Vijay Parv
(We are proud of our armies, let’s celebrate victory day together)

During the Week, MapMyIndia (domestic rival of Google Maps) decided to go to capital markets and its IPO was oversubscribed 4.13 times in two days.
Maps in fact is one of the many common people use cases for the geo-spatial information ecosystem. There is lots of potential to create value for multiple initiatives in urban development, tourism, forestry, e-governance , agriculture etc.
Two earlier newsletters have focussed on
Three dimensions- Data Management , Transportation and Manufacturing
Late Gen Bipin Rawat while speaking at the launch ceremony of the Indian Space Association (ISpA) on Oct 11, 2021 said that “Space and cyber domains have become critical to our ability to undertake operations across the spectrum, both in peace and conflict,”. The privatisation of the space industry will catapult the space industry into the future as the central driver of nation building, the CDS had added.
“Where” is the new business opportunity and multiple enterprises are geared up for leveraging Indian Space Ecosystem to realise the dream of #5trilliondollar #economy . GeoSpatial Data use can be seen having a three fold impact- First, empowering citizens; Second, enhancing efficiency in governance, and Third, supporting an inclusive social and economic order.
GIS can be used for addressing the bottom of the pyramid", and a National GIS is expected to do that to improve the lives of common citizens.
For example, Survey of Villages Abadi & Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas (SVAMITVA) Scheme which is a Central Sector scheme managed by Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR). In the States, the Revenue Department / Land Records Department will be the Nodal Department and shall carry out the scheme with support of State Panchayati Raj Department. Survey of India is the technology partner for implementation.
The scheme aims to provide an integrated property validation solution for rural India. The demarcation of rural abadi areas would be done using Drone Surveying technology. This would provide the ‘record of rights’ to village household owners possessing houses in inhabited rural areas in villages which, in turn, would enable them to use their property as a financial asset for taking loans and other financial benefits from Bank
More recently, there have been case studies of use of geo-spatial data for covid19 management as well as crowd sourcing of geo-tagging of points, lines and area information.
Above picture is a representation of geotagging all the home quarantine cases in Narayanpet district and enabling in monitoring them from a simple-to-use through Bhuvan dashboard.
Similarly, launch of ArcGIS Platform as-a-service (PaaS) that includes maps and location services will reduce time to market and promote creative design, enabling an open location-focused PaaS for software developers, businesses, and organizations that need to bring maps and location services into their products, solutions, and systems.
To conclude, data is the new OIL and time has come for utilising Big GeoSpatial Data to create Small Data use cases using AI/ML.

As usual, this is just a start and more peaks are yet to come.
Talking of peaks, drop everything and watch 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible streaming on Netflix. The goal of climbing 14 peaks above 8000 Mts looked impossible but Nirmal Purja wasn’t afraid to arrogantly name his mission, “Project Possible”.
According to a feature in EastMojo, when asked why he was undertaking such an arduous mission,
Nirmal Purja answered in his trademark style that he was doing it to draw the attention of the world to the unsung and yet almost superhuman Nepali climbers. He wanted to show the world that they were the best and the toughest in the world and that they were so by a long way.
He was also doing it to finally win for Nepal the much deserved and still denied global reverence and respect in the sphere of high altitude climbing. More than anything else, he was doing it to show what a spirited and inspired human being was capable of and so that his exploits could forever be a reminder and beacon for the people of the world to never consider anything daunting or impossible.
14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible is Nirmal Purja’s story and it is one that is worthy of celebration and remembrance. This also brought focus on many other unsung heroes in multiple industries. In fact , Kumar Anubhav in our MountainSpeak session brought the focus on “paying for traditional knowledge“ as a mechanism to improve rural/sustainable tourism in India. More on that in the OTM section below.
Stay Safe.
I Love You

Founded back in 2012, NotOnMap works to preserve the local culture and heritage of Rural India by introducing them to self-sustaining opportunities hidden in the rich resources and assets of their surroundings. At NotOnMap, milestones are counted through the projects that have helped several rural villages as part of this movement and numerous homestays registered across more diverse locations across India covering rustic destinations and unexplored NotOnMap routes.
