During the Week, Twitter announced plans to let users charge for extra, exclusive material not shown to their regular followers. This can include subscriber-only newsletters, videos, deals and discounts. Interested users would pay a monthly subscription fee to access the extra content. This has been long time anticipated as many other platforms including Patreon, Substack and OnlyFans seemed to given creators and influencers to make money from their online popularity.
Content monetisation can be primarily considered from Subscription vs Advertisement perspective. I have written about Passion & Platforms AND News Media & Platforms. What should be the role of platforms in creation, discovery , distribution and monetisation of content both for individuals and institutions ?
Recent developments in Australia point to an interesting development in content monetisation especially news discovered through aggregators like Facebook and Google. Bone of contention has been the use of news snippets in google search & Facebook timeline and need to pay the news organisation. All the platforms have argued their contribution in aggregating and discovery of news sources through their algorithms. Platforms like Facebook, Google , Twitter etc have changed the fundamental ways in which users consume news and thus forcing the news organisations to change their business model or rather their approach towards news curation and consumption.
Discovery and distribution has been a major challenge in academic writing as well. Many of us in academic research struggle to publish in journals and other publishing outlets while solving the twin objectives of being read as well as making an impact. Many journals now charge for publishing research and then charge again to read published work thus creating some heart-burn in academicians.
Of course, much of this content is available through pirate sites, such as Sci-Hub, (which is being curbed by publishers with help from public authorities) and scholarly collaboration networks including ResearchGate. Major scientific publishers including three of the largest scholarly publishers—Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley are scrambling to have deals with university consortium and even national government. Government of India plans to get an exclusive subscription for all its citizens through agreements with all the leading publishers including Elsevier.
The future of content monetisation seems to be moving towards subscription which puts the creator right in middle of current conversation surrounding content strategy . It also provides more creator control and thus accountability of creator towards their users. The power of internet in carving a niche and being able to serve the long tail is finally a possibility for content creators.

Over the Weekend, I restructured two of my pet projects- RPML and MountainSpeak. I have decided to converge them to provide a more seamless engagement with you.
I am going ahead with fortnightly MountainSpeak session with interesting people and then use the content to drive a more personal analysis including show notes in the subsequent week’s newsletter. I have discussed the idea of documenting these extraordinary career trajectories with many of you and drawing lessons for all of us. Let me know if you would like to recommend some interesting speakers for MountainSpeak. Rest of the two Sundays, you would get the regular newsletter with my views and analysis about Running , Platforms, Marketing and Life in general.
I would be interacting with members of Rotary Club of Pune Central on Saturday, 6th March 2021 over Zoom. Thanks Jignesh Patel for the invitation. Jignesh is an IBS Hyd alumni and a dear friend who is running an extraordinary Vaccine-On-Wheels to bring health for all.
This talk though would be mostly focussing on my running journey and the lessons that I have learnt for career, business and life. Hope to see you around.
Would love to hear from you. Do share your views and comments.
I Love You
Shailendra
