During the Week, Dataquest hosted Deep Tech event, the DQDeepTech on 15th December 2021. This second edition of the event brought experts, stakeholders, government officials and academia across industries together on one platform for thought leadership on the cutting-edge of technology. One of the speakers Lt. Gen. AK Bhatt (Retd), Director General, Indian Space Association (ISpA) shared his insights on what’s fuelling India’s SpaceTech growth and the rapidly expanding role of Space Tech in everyday lives of the common man and the future of Indian Space Industry.
According to multiple reports, India has a potential to capture about 9% of the 360 billions dollars global space economy when we currently just account for 2% share of this pie. An enlightened regulatory ecosystem combined with the enormous talent pool can help India propel itself to the front row in the SpaceTech economy. SpaceTech has become an integral part of our lives.
As I wrote in my earlier newsletter, there are many common people use cases for the geo-spatial information ecosystem. There is lots of potential to create value for multiple initiatives in urban development, tourism, forestry, e-governance , agriculture etc. Two more newsletters have focussed on
Three dimensions- Data Management , Transportation and Manufacturing
Late Gen Bipin Rawat while speaking at the launch ceremony of the Indian Space Association (ISpA) on Oct 11, 2021 said that “Space and cyber domains have become critical to our ability to undertake operations across the spectrum, both in peace and conflict,”. The privatisation of the space industry will catapult the space industry into the future as the central driver of nation building, the CDS had added.
Department of Space has been pro-active and had released the draft for a new ‘Spacecom Policy’ in October 2020 which allows and promotes private participation in the field of space-based secured communication. Recently in September 2021, ISRO released Chandrayaan-2 data to engage academia, students and other stakeholders with the scientific community and analyse data for future developments. going further, NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), in collaboration with ISRO and CBSE, has launched ATL Space Challenge 2021, open for all school going students across the country to ensure that students in grades 6 to 12 have access to an open platform where they can develop and empower themselves to address problems related to digital age space technology.
Of course, the perils of too many players some of them not-so-ethical has created problems of waste and trash even in space. Major Peake, the first British astronaut to walk in space, while giving evidence to the House of Commons Defence Committee said
communications satellites vital to many aspects of modern life were all potentially in jeopardy from the "hundreds of thousands" of small pieces of debris travelling "exceptionally fast".
In fact, there is an opportunity to innovate to solve the problem. One Indian start-up Digantara is working to secure long-term space flight safety by developing space debris tracking and monitoring services.
To conclude, the troika of scientific legacy of ISRO, growing industry interest with young talent and supportive government can help India leapfrog into the next orbit.

Over the Weekend, we had great fun at Airtel Hyderabad Marathon 2021. Both Archana and I ran a Full Marathon (42 KM) and thanks to lovely weather and extraordinary support from organisers and volunteers had an awesome run. It was first Full Marathon for Archana and nothing gives greater joy than finishing a long run in your home ground with family and friends around.
In a usual long distance running narrative, there was a route change couple of hours before the Full Marathon start time which led to the inclusion of the dreaded Microsoft-ISB Road climb that too towards the end of the marathon when you are anyways running on sheer will power and nothing else. But eventually , it turned out to be a test of character and I am pretty sure many of my fellow runners would emerge stronger out of the whole experience. Let me quote my favourite Stoic philosopher Seneca on dealing with adversity.
I judge you unfortunate because you have never lived through misfortune. You have passed through life without an opponent— no one can ever know what you are capable of, not even you.
It was also very heartening to see a large contingent from IBS Hyderabad though mostly alumni running at the event including many who travelled from outside Hyderabad. Not a very large but very encouraging participation from my running group Peerancheruvu Runners was the highlight. We had four Maiden Full Marathon finishers and many others with their personal best performances. Of course, it was proud moment when one of our own Chaitanaya was also the Assistant Race Director who along with many others who volunteered officially and unofficially made it an awesome experience despite the short time to prepare and emerging daily uncertainties. Kudos to all the organisers and volunteers.
Stay Safe. Hope to see you soon again in another event or just like that. Stay in touch.
I Love You
Shailendra
