Interesting piece Sir, yet again. I personally feel apparel rental platforms will take a deep hit in their rather modest customer base as not only most of their target customers are ones seeking a special occasion dress never to be worn again. Since these special occasions are going to decrease for sure atleast for the rest of the year and along with the ever rising sanitation fear, sustainability is a sure impasse for these platforms.
Those are the second order effects of Covid-19 on the fashion industry ! No Events, No Going Out so lets laze around in pyjamas at home ! Though people are excited about seeing birds and Himalayas from their homes but sustainability would take a hit ! Production and consumption is so distant and disconnected that we fail to see the impact of our actions on environment.
Your newsletters are so revitalising! brings new dimensions, new perspectives all the time. This was such an unconventional topic. I never really thought about fashion industry while considering the consequences of COVID-19. I guess, this is one day of the week when my neurons fire in multiple directions :) Thank you for this insight Sir !
I can see the evolution of mask as a new fashion statement and how every creator is giving their flavor to this new fashion accessory. What I am also noticing is how creators who are making handmade products are also pitching in and raising the voice for using handmade products with #vocalforlocal. I hope this whole #vocalforlocal help our artisans along with other local production units :)
Thank you sir for mentioning Folklores India. We have started it thinking vocal for local few years back . Now it's the need of an hour. Even major players in fashion industry, Tata or designer Ritu Kumar have put artisans online or working closely with them .. but the conditions will only improve when the buyers will shop consciously n follow shop local.
As you have questioned in the newsletter, that can mask be the new fashion statement. This question triggered in my mind, that lately I saw few ads on embroidered, colourful, printed masks from Fabindia. It was under the sub category of face masks in women’s accessories category.
So, a new product category indeed has come up. Also, as you have mentioned the new normal of wearing a mask and so it is.
Your newsletters provoke me to visualise things in a different way!!!
We have seen multiple handloom stores as well as artisan networks promoted by governments getting into the market with their offerings. Though, I think it would not be able to save the fashion retailing as it exists today.
If I talk about Covid 19 and the fashion industry. This situation not only bought the dark clouds to the apparel industry but also hampered the placement of students who all are pursuing their career in fashion. Recently I read about the placement related issues faced by the National Institute of Fashion Technology ( Nift) and Pearl Academy. Many companies like Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, and Van Heusen revealed that fresh hiring is their least priority for at least next 5 to 6 months which is the major drawback to the students of Nift or any other institutes where students basically pursue their studies in apparel sectors. I hope this storm will end soon and balance again everything for everyone :)
And yeah definitely will tell my father too to try his trousers on a daily basis haha!!
All the suppliers to the industry would get impacted. We are yet to see the pressure on Commercial Real Estate because of falling demand for fashion goods and services. Advertising revenue for media companies might also see a sharp decline.
Indeed COVID 19 has brought about changes that are difficult to comprehend but on the positive side like you said its time for all of us to come together and create our new sense of fashion. Its also probably the time to be bold and become the entrepreneurs that the world is looking up to. I truly feel fashion is a way of expression hence its time to express what's inside you and you have an entire world ready to embrace and appreciate your talent. Shaileder Sir thank you for sharing this wonderfully written newsletter.
